The Coniston 14 is probably the
most beautiful road race
in Britain. Each year it attracts some 1600 runners and
has a reputation for being one of the best organised small
races in the country. The Race is organised by an enthusiastic
committee of volunteers from Coniston village.
It was first run in 1982 and since then has become a popular
spring event in the village calendar. The Race is unusual. The hilly route follows the 13.875 miles
of road that circles Coniston water and there are stunning views
of the surrounding mountains. The 11am start on Saturday
allows runners, their family and friends to travel up to the
Lake District and many spend the weekend in Coniston.
There is a lively atmosphere in the village, with its 5 pubs and
many guesthouses. Although the Coniston 14 has a reputation for its friendliness
and relaxed atmosphere it is still a competitive club race as
well as attracting fun runners. There are a wide array of individual
and club prizes, with special groups such as the over 70’s being
recognised. Every runner who completes the course receives a
local slate memento. Each year the Coniston 14 Committee raises some £5,000 from
the Race and this is donated to about 25 local charities and
clubs in the community. A social evening is organised in early
summer when cheques are presented to these organisations. If you are new to the Coniston 14 we hope you will enjoy a unique
and memorable event. For the many who return each year,
welcome back and thanks for your continued support. |
